Fox Glacier
Fox Glacier lies on the West Coast of the South Island. At a
latitude of 40 degrees south there are no other glaciers as
easily accessible as the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers. Visitors
to the region can hike up either of the glaciers for an unequalled
view of the surrounding terrain.
Fox glacier travels for 13 kilometers from it's source to the coast, during this time it's height falls a dramatic 2600 meters. The glacier is named after an early New Zealand prime minister, William Fox. The road to the glacier is a long stretch of grey terminal moraine, rocks and detritus left over from years of advancing and melting.
