Hiking in New Zealand

New Zealand has 14 national parks, 10 of which are found in the rugged South Island. These parks are accessible via a vast network of hiking trails and backcountry cabins which are maintained by the New Zealand Department of Conservation.

Although hiking in New Zealand is a popular activity, it’s important to be aware of the risks involved whenever you’re heading into the wilderness. The weather in New Zealand can change rapidly and overseas visitors are unfamiliar and often unprepared for the conditions. Opting for a guided trip is a hassle-free and safe way to explore the New Zealand outdoors without having to worry about the logistics and planning involved in organising a hiking trip in a remote part of the world. Hiking in New Zealand is an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience and we want to make sure you enjoy it to the full!  Here’s more information about a few of our favourite hiking trails…

Milford Track – Fiordland National Park
Described as “the finest walk in the world", the track extends for 54km (33 miles) from the northern end of Lake Te Anau, to Sandfly Point near Milford Sound. It is renowned for its glacially carved valleys, alpine flowers and waterfalls.

Hollyford Track – Fiordland National Park
The Hollyford Track is a 38km (24 miles), three day trek from the Hollyford Road end to the old port of Martins Bay. Beginning among the sheer rock walls of the Darran Mountains, the track follows the Hollyford River/Whakatipu Ka Tuka on its journey to the sea. On the way you’ll pass through historic gold mining country and two beautiful remote lakes – Alabaster/Waiwahuika and McKerrow/Whakatipu Waitai.

Angelus Circuit – Nelson Lakes National Park
The Angelus Track is a 31km (20 miles), three day hike that starts by hugging the shores of Lake Rotoiti before climbing steeply into the mountains to a charming cabin next to Lake Angelus. The last day is a stunning walk along Robert’s Ridge with unsurpassed views of the Kaikoura Mountain Range.

Siberia Valley – Mt Aspiring National Park
After taking an exciting scenic flight from Makarora, this hike meanders through the Siberia Valley along the Wilkin River to Siberia Hut. From there you can drop off your pack and head up to Lake Crucible which is nestled under Mt. Alba. It’s a steep hike which takes around 3-4hrs (approx. 7kms). Or you can just enjoy the views from the hut and relax with a cuppa!
How can I do this hike?

Tongariro Crossing – Tongariro National Park
This hike is commonly referred to as the best mountain day hike in New Zealand and it’s easy to see why. With its alien-like volcanic landscape, punctuated by active craters, steam vents and emerald-coloured lakes, it stands out as a truly unique hiking experience. The hike takes around 7-8 hours, so it’s a big day… but well worth it!
How can I do this hike?

Welcome Flat to Copland Hot Pools – Westland Tai Poutini National Park
This three day hike has an outstanding feature – three huge natural hot pools, located literally metres away from a two-storey cabin! It’s a 17km (10 mile) trek into the hot pools and from there you can continue up the valley to Douglas Rock for amazing views of the snowy Southern Alps, or you can spend the day soaking in the pools surrounded on three sides by stunning mountain ranges. Then hike downhill along a river valley back to the start of the track.
